From the back cover: Invited to perform with Sabicas, the greatest flamenco guitarist for this recording are Los Trianeros, whose name would indicate that they come from the barrio across the Guadalquivir in Sevilla called Triana. Some say that Triana was the cradle of flamenco.

Los Trianeros join together in the Bulerias, Sevillanas, Verdiales, and Flandangos de Huelva and the three guitars and two singers entirely exhaust the pleasures of these exciting modes.

Rhythm Meets Rugolo - Pete Rugolo

Repetitious Riff
Rhythm Meets Rugolo
Pete Rugolo And His AllStars
Design by Emmett McBain
Mercury Records
SR 60119
1960

From the back cover: Though still young, Pete Rugolo has been instrumental in shaping the professional careers of names like Stan Kenton and June Christy, among others. Now along comes stereo to help shape the career of this young Californian arranger.

From Billboard - May 30, 1960: Pete Rugolo and His All Stars come thru with bright, and occasionally wild readings of some solid jazz items here. Rugolo's arrangements are startling modern, and the hip jazz fans will enjoy them. The stereo sound, however is disappointing. Tunes include originals, "Fawncy Meeting You," and "Later Team," and standards, "Nancy With the Laughing Face" and "Sunday, Monday or Always."

Horn Of Plenty - Dick Collins

Horn Of Plenty
Dick Collins And The Runaway Herd
Arrangements: Nat Pierce & Al Cohn
Photography: Bill Zeitung
RCA Victor
LJM-1019
1955

From the inside cover: The "Runaway Herd" which Collins fronts in these recordings is, for the most part, made up of members of the Woody Herman band – only alto saxist Med Flory and tenor man Al Cohn are not of that aggregation. It would, indeed, be difficult, if not impossible, to assemble a more swinging sax section than that which includes, in addition to Flory and Cohn, the remarkable tenor stylists, Bill Perkins and Dick Hafer, and baritone specialist Jack Nimitz – all of whom blow delightfully throughout the proceedings. Nat Pierce contributes several engaging bits on piano, and the drumming of Chuck Flores – a protege of Shelly Manne's – is at all times both solid and lightly ringing.

H&J, Tickletoe, Taps Miller and Walk, Don't Run

Same as first session except Condoli for Reasinger.

From Billboard - June 19, 1954: Shorty Rodgers and a group of topflight modern jazzmen show off their appreciation for the music of Count Basie, and both Basie fans and the cool set will appreciate the ork's work. Surprising as it may sound the cool cats manage to capture the flavor of the Basie ork work, while at the same time keeping within the modern idiom. Selections include Basie favorites like "Swingin' the Blues," "Jump for Me" and "Taps Miller," the latter two penned by the Count. And three of the selections, "Over and Out," "Walk Don't Run" and "Basie Eyes," were penned by Rodgers himself. Rodgers, Maynard Ferguson, Harry Edison and Pete Condoli on trumpets, Jimmy Guiffre and Bill Holman on tenor, Milt Bernhart on trombone and Shelley Manne on drums are in the groove. A set that should interest many jazz fans.

Hot Mallets - Lionel Hampton

Memories Of You

Hot Mallets
Lionel Hampton and His Orchestra
Inside photo courtesy Metronome Magazine
RCA Victor
Collectors Issue
LJM-1000
1954

From the inside cover (also see back cover scan for the complete list and recording dates): The roster of musicians who played with Hampton on these record dates reads like a who's who of jazz; trumpeters Cootie Williams, Rex Stewart, Jonah Jones, Dizzy Gillespie (pre-bop), Red Allen and Ziggy Elman; Lawrence Brown and J. C. Higginbotham on trombone; sax sections numbering such luminaries as Johnny Hodges, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Chu Berry; Buster Bailey and Mezz Mezzow on clarinet; and rhythm sections variously comprising Jess Stacy and Clyde Hart, piano; Allan Renuss, Charlie Christian and Al Casey, guitar; John Kirby, Milt Hinton and Artie Bernstein; bass; with Cozy Cole, Sid Catlett, Sonny Greer and Slick Jones on drums.

From Billboard - April 7, 1954: When Lionel Hampton was a member of the Benny Goodman crew back in the late 1930's he used to cut sides with members of the Goodman ork, plus other well-known sidemen who were in town at the time. The label has collected some of these sides and issued them on this new and well-packaged LP release as small band jazz. Many of Hap's fans, who only know him from his current wild-swinging crew, will be surprised at his "quiet" swing work on these disks. The sides are mighty listenable, and they feature great work by Camp as well as by names like Cootie Williams, Rex Stewart, Benny Carter, Jess Stacey, Charlie Christian and Johnny Hodges. A good set for collectors with fine liner notes by Bill Zeitung.
