Introduction To Stereo

Tabu
Introduction To Stereo
Westminster WSS-1

Needless to say, this album is no "introduction to graphic design". Why Westminster, having published many fine album covers spent no money on this design, is a mystery to me.

The contents, for the most part, also seem "budget" or "dashed" together. The stereo engineering sounds weak to my ears. However, Ralph Font's cover of Tabu (or Taboo) is worth posting as a sample to compare with any mono versions that may floating around out there.

I thought I had the Font's LP that this track was lifted from, but I can't find the copy. Instead, check out this super fun Font project: Longhair Goes Cha-Cha

Yippee Ole - Western Songs The Latin Way - Melino

Along The Navajo Trail
Yippee-Ole
Western Songs The Latin Way
Melino And His Orchestra
Jubilee JLP 1042
1957

Blending traditional western song titles and Latin rhythm suggests that this is one album that I should not purchase. However, the black fishnet hose clad model on the cover demands that I must purchase the album. And so here the record is, hose cheesecake and cha cha cowboy rhythm song sample, featured now in The Atomic Attic.

Actually, the album presents a pretty decent Latin set that is only slightly "western" in sound, although the Cha Cha dance beat does sound somewhat like a horse plodding down the dirt street of some gold rush town.

From the back cover: Introduced at the world-famous Grossinger, N.Y. Country Club, where Melino has been featured with his band the past two hears, "Yodelin' Cowboy" (the only vocal number)  as greeted with such enthusiastic reaction that Melino was prompted to refashion a raft of well-known Western airs in Latin tempos.

Percussive Pineapples - Lani Royal

Beyond The Sea
The Sound Of Hawaii
Percussive Pineapples
Producer: Michael Kapp
Lani Royal With The Diamond Head Band
Medallion MS-7516

Budget Command label book-fold design. No arranger or artist credit appears in the massive amount of jacket copy. Command-like sound featuring horn bridges on most tracks. The brass works for me on some tunes, but sounded "dated" (for the time) on other tracks.

Monster - Jimmy Smith

Gloomy Sunday
Monster
The Incredible Jimmy Smith
Arrange And Conducted By Oliver Helson
Recorded January 19 & 20, 1965
Verve V-8618

Here's a fine Verve album featuring heavy organ jams by Jimmy Smith with arrangements influenced by the ever creative in-house producer, Creed Taylor.

The terrific blend of colorful cover art (Acy Lehman), funky song titles, the organ tones of Jimmy Smith and the strong sessions band make for a great package.

From the inside notes: As a result, Creed Taylor, Verve A&R Producer, commissioned Oliver Nelson to write the charts for some of New York's finest reed man. The arrangements surround the leading man with tonal clusters that add a new dimension to orchestration. These saxes have bite. To get the over-all effect you need the outstanding ability of a master arranger-conductor combined with the best musicians in the business.

Reeds & woodwinds: Robert Ashton, Danny Banks, Ray Beckenstein, George Dorsey, Harvey Estrin, Budd Johnson, Jerome Richardson and Phil Woods
Guitar: Kenny Burrell
Bass: Richard Davis
Drums: Grady Tate
Percussion: Warren T. Smith Jr.
