Out On A Limb - Pete Regolo

In A Modal Tone
Out On A Limb
Pete Rugolo And Orchestra
Emarcy 36115
1958

Terrific project from the creative Pete Rugolo. Rugolo varies the arrangements to create moods that keep you engaged through this well-paced set.

From the back cover: Pete Rugolo has become an increasingly variegated professional writer. He has produced music for films, for vocal backgrounds, for TV shows of varying requirements, for jazz bands, for just about any assignment involving score paper. Born in Sicily in 1915, Pete was brought to California when he was five. He began his career as a professional pianist in the late 30s in the San Francisco-Oakland area. He became nationally and then internationally known as a result of his charging, ambitiously diversified arrangements for the Stan Kenton orchestra from 1945 to 1949. In his free-lance years since, he has acquired growing skills in the afore cited areas and in several more.

For Pete, this album was a chance to indicate the different ways he feels materials in the jazz idiom can be approached. "I wrote each tune the way I felt it," he explains, "There are ballads and concert pieces and swingers, but I didn't restrict myself to a rule that every bar had to swing or that there had to be a certain amount of commercial writing. These are simply some of the ways in which I like to write. I was given complete freedom of material and in the selection of musicians. This album was written, incidentally, during a particularly demanding month when I had to provide arrangements for two other albums beside this and some other assignments. Yet because this involved writing the way I felt, I completed this album in time and in the way I wanted it to sound.

This album was made in three sessions. Present on all were pianist, Russ Freeman, Bassist Joe Mondraogon, Drummer Shelley Manne, and Vibist Larry Bunker. The alternate guitars were Howard Roberts and Barney Kessel. Among the other familiar names besides those not already given solo credit were Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Chiders, Ray Linn and Tuba, Jay McAllister.

Also from the back cover: In A Modal Tone was originally written for piano by Rugolo in 1940 as an exercise when he was studying at Mills college. "I wanted to call it Darius, after Darius Milhaud, who was one of my teachers there. It's very polytonal but is based on a modal scale that is not, however, utilized all the way through." The instrumentation is two French horns, two trumpets, two trombones and tuba.

Once A Thief - Lalo Schifrin

Once A Thief
Once A Thief
And Other Themes Lalo Schifrin
Produced by Creed Taylor
Verve V-8624
1965

Diverse set which is held together by the jazz vibe you might expect to hear from this Verve/Schifrin program.

From inside the book-fold jacket: More than anything, this album is a showcase for the original compositions of Lalo Schifrin. Some have appeared before in other forms, notably, The Cat, which was the Grammy Award winner this year for the best jazz composition. Jimmy Smith and Lalo collaborated for that grand slam. I'm especially glad it won, inasmuch as it was my personal choice, and my radio show embraces the West Coast home base of the NARAS – the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. – Johnny Magnus, Radio KMPC, Los Angeles

The set includes several vocal numbers by Irene Reid (including Once A Thief). Good stuff, although I enjoyed the instrumental version more.

Leader and Piano: Lalo Schifrin, French Horn: Jimmy Buffington, Robert Northern, Willie Ruff. Guitar: Kenny Burrell, Tuba: Don Butterfield. Trombone: Jimmy Cleveland, James L. Johnson, Tony Studd, Bob Brookmeyer. Bass: Bob Cranshaw. Trumpet: Freddy Hubbard, Ernie Royal, Eugene Young, Clark Terry. Tenor Sax and Flute: Jerome Richardson, James Moody. Viola: Alfred Brown, Harold Coletta, Harold Furmansky, Murray Sandry. Violin; Max Cahn, Lewis Eley, Mary Lou Galen, Emanuel Green, Leo Kahn, Leo Kruczek, Joseph Malignaggi, Gene Orloff, Max Pollikoff, Raoul Poliakin, Tosha Samaroff, Avram Weiss. Cello: Charles McCracken, George Ricci, Harvey Shapiro, Alan Shulman. Harp: Margaret Ross. Drums: Grady Tate or Dave Bailey. Alto Sax, Clarinet and Alto Flute: Phil Woods

Swing Hi Swing Fi - George Siravo

Some Of These Days
Swing Hi Swing Fi
George Siravo And His Orchestra
Vik LX-1125
1958

From the back cover: He (Siravo) knew where he was going at all times so he was able to accept the ideas formulated by others, let them sit and soak for a while and later bring them forth in a pattern that was individualistic and fresh. For source material, Siravo had the best the band business had to offer at the time. He played with bands led by Glenn Miller, Jan Savitt and Artie Shaw and he wrote arrangements for Charlie Barnet, Gene Krupa, Benny Goodman and the late greats Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey.

From Billboard - February 17, 1958: A dozen truly great standards, done by Siravo with such verve that they sound fresh and new. Repertoire includes "Sweet Sue," "Mary Lou," "My Gal Sal" etc. Notes by Mike Gross catch the spirit of the performances. Excellent sound and engineering.

Hi-Fi Living

From Billboard - September 2, 1957: RCA Victor has prepared a new $1.79 LP line exclusively for rack jobbers. The label, RCA Custom Records, will be a special continuous promotion deal, which first will be tested with three of the country's biggest rack concerns in different areas. Tests will begin in the next week or two.

According to Victor's Irwin Tarr, who heads the company's rack and syndicate selling, the recorded material consists entirely of standard pop tunes, newly recorded in hi-fi specifically for this series. The series itself, to be issued on the basis of a disk a week for 12 weeks, will be tagged the "RCA Custom for Hi-Fi Living Series." There will be 12 top standards in each 12-inch set.

This represents the first time Victor has ventured to sell directly to rack jobbers without involving its distributors. The company's Camden line, which includes disks in all categories by name artists, sells at $1.98, and is handled by Victor distributors. The RCA Custom line does not utilize name acts in this initial series.
